UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – The United States made a strong plea to China at the United Nations on Friday, urging Beijing to cease ‘fueling Russia’s aggression’ in Ukraine. Acting U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Dorothy Shea pointed a finger at China, calling for an end to the export of dual-use goods to Russia that empower its military activities in Ukraine. Emphasizing that China’s purported strict export controls were contradicted by the daily discovery of Chinese components in Russian weaponry, Shea underlined the need for action.
On the flip side, China’s deputy U.N. Ambassador Geng Shuang rebuffed the allegations, asserting that China bore no responsibility for commencing the Ukrainian conflict, supplied no lethal armaments, and diligently managed the export of dual-use materials. Shuang urged the U.S. to stop deflecting blame and provoking animosity, imploring instead for constructive contributions to ceasefire and peace negotiations.
A recent Reuters expose uncovered a covert operation where Chinese engines were illicitly channeled to a Russian drone manufacturer under deceptive labels to sidestep Western sanctions. ‘If China genuinely desires peace, it must desist from bolstering Russia’s belligerence,’ Shea reiterated.
In a diplomatic showdown, Washington slammed China’s perceived complicity in Russia’s actions while Beijing vehemently denied any culpability in the conflict, pivoting blame back onto the U.S. Both nations stressed the need for peaceful resolution, albeit from contrasting stances. The tension between the U.S. and China underscores the intricacies intertwined in the Ukraine conflict, hinting at deeper geopolitical rivalries that could shape future global dynamics.
The U.S.-China tussle over Ukraine highlights the discord between major powers and the nuances of their intertwined interests on the global stage. As accusations fly and tensions escalate, the United Nations serves as the pivotal arena for hashing out differences and advocating for peaceful measures, despite the underlying power struggles at play.
